Long before Daybreak opened its doors, the heart of Land of a Thousand Hills began in Rwanda. Before the 1994 civil war, coffee was a thriving part of daily life—but years of fighting and genocide shattered the industry and the trust between neighboring farmers. To help rebuild both community and opportunity, our founder, Jonathan Golden, launched the first LTH coffee washing station in the Ruli region.
He bought a small 12-lb roaster, hired a consultant, and started roasting—figuring that if the idea failed, he’d at least have gifts for the next 20 years. Thankfully, it succeeded. Farmers who hadn’t spoken in years began working side by side again, and coffee became a path toward restoration.
